Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), often referred to as simply "anxiety", is a medical condition in which a person experiences excessive levels of anxiety and worry on an ongoing basis. The anxious feelings usually appear unfounded, and disproportionate to the reality of the situation. However, in some cases, these feelings of worry and dread can become so severe that they impede a person's concentration, sleep, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

It can be helpful to note that anxiety is not always bad. Anxiety is normal and everyone experiences it at different times and with varying intensity. It is a functional response as it heightens your awareness, prompting you to take action in life situations and motivating you to change in positive ways.

However, anxiety can be a problem when it becomes overwhelming. It is an issue when anxiety appears in everyday situations, or in specific situations that are not a danger, yet they are evaluated consciously or subconsciously as a threat.

Anxiety can appear at any point in a person’s life. Whether it’s a successful CEO struggling with an existential direction, victims of abuse who have been coping for years, or up-and-coming professionals who suffer through their public speaking fears - there are several treatments which can immediately bring about positive change and or total resolution of the fear and anxiety.

Each person experiences anxiety in a different way and in different situations, therefore at Counseling Perspective our anxiety counseling utilises techniques from a variety of therapies, which are tailored to the needs of each person.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a very effective treatment for anxiety. It brings immediate and long-lasting results.  Treatment for these anxieties can be dealt with effectively within the first treatment but may take longer depending on the nature and severity of the source of the trauma. This can include any and all fear-based anxieties, e.g., fear of flying, animals, insects and social situation, etc.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be used alongside other forms of therapy for the treatment of anxiety. CBT works with the cognitions (thoughts), the emotions/feelings and the behaviours that evolve and the effect on the physiology of the body. Through the specific techniques taught by your therapist, you will begin to develop the skills necessary for changing and updating limiting beliefs to create healthier thinking patterns.

Mindfulness-based therapies are also useful to help alleviate anxiety issues. Mindfulness focuses on building awareness of the thought patterns that lead to increased anxiety. The increased focus on the present moment that characterises Mindfulness helps to create space between the self and the experience, and the heightened awareness reduces the grip of persistent negative thought loops. Together these mechanisms helps to reduce anxiety.

Repetition and reinforcement are key to changing your thought patterns though CBT or Mindfulness approaches. It can be helpful to view these techniques are training for the brain. Just as you train your muscles to become stronger at the gym, you have to brain your brain to become stronger through practicing specific techniques taught by your therapist.
